You know in the beginning of Eminem’s “Lose Yourself” when he’s like “Look, if you had one shot or one opportunity to seize everything you ever wanted in one moment…would you capture it or just let it slip?”
Well, Teyana let her moment slip when she dropped her debut album VII and I’ve had beef with her ever since.
Teyana has always talked about putting out an album and how much she really wanted to do music and when she finally got the chance, she abandoned it.
VII was a solid body of work for an R&B album and Teyana really surprised me with it. Her sultry 90’s inspired sound worked for her and brought back that classic R&B vibe that was missing when she put the album out in 2014.
This album got slept on so hard due to lack of promotion from Teyana and her label. It’s like once she finally put out the project, she wiped her hands clean from the whole thing. She didn’t even finish the videos.
Mind you, for years this girl was always talking about doing music so you would think she would go into overdrive to push this album as much as she can. Kanye is partially to blame because he could have helped her out more since she is signed to G.O.O.D. Music. However, this is not really a great excuse since everyone on the G.O.O.D. roster have to hustle on their own if they really want to be heard. I mean, look at Big Sean, his work ethic is amazing and he is consistently working hard whether Ye is helping him or not.
Maybe was getting hella radio play and I saw a lot of people discussing how much they liked the album. Songs like Dreams, Broken Hearted Girl, Business and Do Not Disturb were stand out tracks that made me see that Teyana really could have a successful music career.
I guess I’m just upset because I saw the potential this album had and Teyana paid it dust. It kills me how people crave the limelight and once they get it, they chicken out or don’t commit 100% of the way. Since VII, Teyana released “The Cassette Tape 1994” in 2015 and it was alright but it didn’t capture my attention like VII. The mixtape relied too heavily on samples instead of it being organic tracks. Now, after getting engaged and having her baby, Teyana will be going on tour for VII but is it too late?
